Rights of Immigrants and Immigration Policy
Introduction Each year, a great number of new immigrants arrive into the country from all over the world. Some of these immigrants enter the country legally while the others try to get in illegally. On the other hand, there are those who attempt to immigrate into the country illegally through various devious means. At the borders, they are apprehended and forcibly made to return to their country. Despite the challenges that the government faces with regard to the immigrant problem, there are cases when authorities are obligated to accept immigrants.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Rights of Immigrants and Immigration Policy specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The rising number of immigrants each year has become a serious debate issue. Some groups support policies that protect the rights of immigrants while others are strongly opposed to the laws that encourage immigrant entrance into the country. According to Sir Mi chael Dummet, the state has several duties towards immigrants. To begin with, the state has to recognize that its primary role is the welfare of its own citizens as well as protection of the others who are in need. Thus the notion that a stateââ¬â¢s sole responsibility is only to ensure and care about its citizensââ¬â¢ wellbeing is faulty and misconceived. Dummet supports his supposition. He claims all the citizens have a personal a certain moral obligation to their country as well. The whole population is represented by their state in the world. Consequently, it follows that some country is also morally obliged to consider the welfare of other states and that of other individuals (Huemer, 2010). This paper will explore the obligations that the nation has towards the acceptance of immigrants. Furthermore, the paper will discuss what a morally justified immigration policy includes. The paper will uphold the position to support for the right of immigration. Statement of politici ansââ¬â¢ position The opposition directed towards immigrants and their rights stems from the sense of selfishness among the citizens and politicians of the host country. Both the electors and the politicians alike promote the idea that a nation is only responsible for its citizens without any regard for immigrants coming in from foreign countries. Consequently, the politicians will normally base their arguments on what they think about serving the interests of their country best. For instance, British politicians involved in the European Union deliberations always ground their decisions to support or veto motions on whether it is in the interest of Britain or not. This is contrary to the expectation that they should consider the interests of the European Union to make their decision whether to support the motion or denounce it. Politicians take this position with regard to one crucial reason, which is foreign citizens are of little or no value to their political ambitions. Since the foreign citizens hold no voting power in the country they immigrate into, the politicians deem them insignificant for their campaigns (Dummett, 2001).Advertising Looking for essay on constitutional law? This concept supports national independence and non-interference by other foreign nations, especially on matters of how it deals with its citizens. Additionally, another argument forwarded in opposition to immigrant rights and policies is that each country has an individual right to regulate the activities on its borders. Consequently, the government can exclude or admit foreigners who wish to pass through the countryââ¬â¢s borders. However, those who support free immigration, suppose that countries should not impose any restrictions on immigration. A compariso n is drawn between free immigration and the free market concept. This proposition was strongly supported by Milton Fried Mans as well as Ernest Bevin, who envisioned the total abolition of passports. They argued that free immigration should have been allowed to ensure that basic human right which is the right for freedom ââ¬â particularly freedom of movement would be enjoyed by all humans. Therefore, in the spirit of promoting human rights, no country would have the right to deny any individual entry into a country of his/her choice. Pope John XXIII also supported free immigration policies that excluded no individual from entering into any country. According to Pope John XXIII, all humans are members of a universal family and a greater world society. This existence, according to the Pope, is inherent and cannot be curtailed by any country. Additionally, Pope John XXIII endorsed the fact that immigrants deserved to have their rights recognized and respected. They should enjoy eco nomic rights and personal rights to ensure that they are able to comfortably adapt to a new society. Furthermore, it allows them to obtain a means of self sustenance. There are several reasons as to why the sanctions and restrictions are imposed on immigrants. However, these do not suffice as an excuse in denying those people their right. To begin with, some believe that restricting the number of immigrants entering into the country would protect the national heritage and culture. Additionally, it is claimed that accepting immigrants will increase the economic hardships he state faces as this would impose constrain on the scarce resources of the country. It is, therefore, argued that these restrictions are in the interests of the countryââ¬â¢s native citizens (Dummett, 2001). From my perspective, the rights of immigrants should be upheld and protected. There are several reasons as to why immigration restriction is not a favorable option. To begin with, restricting immigrants from entering a country is a direct violation of their inherent rights. The most common reason for instituting these regulations is to protect and ensure the security of the native citizens.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Rights of Immigrants and Immigration Policy specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In most cases, terrorism has been cited as the main security concern that necessitates immigrant regulation. However, terrorist activities are perpetrated even by the citizens of the country. Additionally, not all immigrates are willing to enter the country to commit a terrorist act. Therefore, this cannot be used as a basis for such limitations. The other reason that has been widely cited is the effect of immigration on employment. Most native citizens feel that the higher the number of immigrants in a country the higher the competition on the existing jobs. This ultimately leads to a decrease in the quality of life of t he native citizens. Since the immigrants are normally desperate for finding jobs they tend to accept low salaries. Employees prefer such workers as the business would incur less operational costs. However this comes at the expense of the native citizens losing their jobs. However, this is not an acceptable reason since it is the duty of the government to regulate and state the base salary within its territory. Furthermore, the jobs are meant to be acquired based on merit and the individualââ¬â¢s qualification. A morally acceptable immigration policy is the one that meets both the interests of the citizens of the country and those of the immigrants. Such a policy is difficult to be developed and implemented as there are various challenges. The situation regarding the issue may be compared to a limited capacity lifeboat (Hardin 2001) since a country cannot take in all the immigrants. References Dummett, M. A. E. (2001). John D. Rockefellar essays
John D. Rockefellar essays John D. Rockefeller is a prime example of what Freuds theory of the pleasure principle is all about. Freud refers to the pleasure principle as the id, which is located in the unconscious state of mind. The id is concerned only with what brings immediate personal satisfaction, regardless of any physical or social limitation(Burger, pg. 48). John D. Rockefeller was born July 8, 1839 and lived until May 23, 1937. During this time frame he became one of the wealthiest men in the United States. Rockefeller grew up on a farm near Richfield, N.Y., before he moved to Cleveland Ohio in 1853. He attended Central High School from 1853-1855 and took some additional courses at a business college before he became assistant bookkeeper for commission merchants Henry B. Tuttle and Isaac L Hewitt in Sept. 1855. It wasnt until 1863, when Rockefeller had decided to enter the oil business, that he began to amass his fortune. He organized STANDARD OIL CO. (OHIO) as its largest stockholder in 1870, directing the company until he retired in 1896, but retaining the title of president until 1911 (Goulder, 1972). It is a fact that Rockefeller did not grow up in a wealthy household and it is also obvious that although his education was limited to only a few college courses, when John D. desired something bad enough, he just went out and found a way to get it. The fact that he continued to retain presidency of his company for 16 years after he was retired clearly shows that he had a need for power and desired to stay at the top of the power pyramid. This is a perfect example of the pleasure principle because the id is only concerned with what an individual wants. By 1880 John D. Rockefeller had become worth 18 million dollars. Money was his key to power and power was everything to Rockefeller. His personal life demonstrates that. He is described as The millionaire, who had lost all of his hair and whose wi...

Scientific Method Lesson Plan
Scientific Method Lesson Plan This lesson plan gives students hands-on experience with the scientific method. The scientific method lesson plan is appropriate for any science course and can be customized to suit a wide range of educational levels. Scientific Method Plan Introduction The steps of the scientific method generally are to make observations, formulate a hypothesis, design an experiment to test the hypothesis, conduct the experiment and determine whether or not the hypothesis was accepted or rejected. Although students often can state the steps of the scientific method, they may have difficulty actually performing the steps. This exercise provides an opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience with the scientific method. Weve chosen goldfish as the experimental subjects because students find them interesting and engaging. Of course, you can use any subject or topic. Time Required The time required for this exercise is up to you. We recommend using a 3-hour lab period, but the project may be conducted in an hour or spread out over several days, depending on how involved you plan to get. Materials A tank of goldfish. Optimally, you want a bowl of fish for each lab group. Scientific Method Lesson You can work with the entire class, if it is small or feel free to ask students to break up into smaller groups. Explain the steps of the scientific method.Show the students a bowl of goldfish. Make a few observations about the goldfish. Ask the students to name characteristics of the goldfish and to make observations. They might notice the color of the fish, their size, where they swim in the container, how they interact with other fish, etc.Ask the students to list which observations involve something which could be measured or qualified. Explain how scientists need to be able to take data to perform an experiment and that some types of data are easier to record and analyze than others. Help students identify types of data that could be recorded as part of an experiment, as opposed to qualitative data that is harder to measure or data that they simply dont have the tools to measure.Have the students pose questions that they wonder about, based on the observations they have made. Make a list of the types of data they might record during an investigation of each topic.Ask the students to formul ate a hypothesis for each question. Learning how to pose a hypothesis takes practice, so its likely the students will learn from brainstorming as a lab group or class. Put up all of the suggestions on a board and help students distinguish between a hypothesis that they can test versus one they cannot test. Ask students if they can improve any of the hypotheses that are submitted. Select one hypothesis and work with the class to devise a simple experiment to test the hypothesis. Gather data or create fictional data and explain how to test the hypothesis and draw a conclusion based on the results.Ask lab groups to choose a hypothesis and design an experiment to test it.If time permits, have the students conduct the experiment, record and analyze the data and prepare a lab report. Assessment Ideas Ask students to present their results to the class. Be sure they state the hypothesis and whether or not it was supported and cite the evidence for this determination.Have students critique each others lab reports, with their grade determined by how well they identify the strong and weak points of the reports.Ask students to hand in a hypothesis and the proposed experiment for a follow-up project, based on the results of the in-class lesson.

Leadership - Essay Example A Panic or Choke Moment My panic or choke moment is from a job scenario. It happened during a meeting in my workplace where I was supposed to give a presentation regarding a new project that our company wanted to initiate. That day turned out to be the most provoking and infuriating of my life. Before that time, I had experienced something similar, but this incident was more pronounced and baffling. The meeting was to take at least one hour since I was the only one presenting the project. I wanted to give a perfect presentation so I had to prepare adequately since my first presentation within my department had inadequacies and pitfalls. I had clearly mastered the whole presentation in my mind, but to ensure a sophisticated presentation, I brought along my laptop and projector. The meeting commenced, my boss did the introduction and thereafter called me to take the centre stage. I took centre stage, got ready by setting up my laptop and projector. I was so motivated and enthusiastic s ince I was sure that I had everything under control. However, five minutes into the presentation, a power surge occurred, which tampered with my laptop. The laptop failed to work; I realized that I could not access my presentation from the laptop, suddenly my mine went blank. Although, I had all the information in my mind, without my laptop, I could do nothing. Contending with the Situation After that incident, I resolved to get help in order to avoid an embarrassment like that again. Choking or panicking can be resolved through different methods. When Novotna faltered during her Wimbledon match, it was because she started to think too much about her shots, and thus, losing her fluidity. In my situation, when the power surge occurred, it tampered with my laptop, which had my presentation. I had put all my focus in presenting with the help of my laptop and projector. All I had to do was to give the presentation from my mind instead of thinking that using the laptop was the only in wh ich I possibly present. If I had relied on my mind, I would have easily avoided the stress and presented the project. Forgetting the past is very important, especially forgetting unpleasant incidences. Novotna, remembering her choke at Wimbledon was again culpable at the French Open in 1995. Forgetting disappointments in the past can help to avoid those affecting current events. Finally, it is important not to think too hard. Failure develops when an individual focuses too much on mechanical and technical procedures when carrying out an activity. As in my case, I focused too much on delivering a sophisticated presentation with my laptop and projector. In addition, contending with situations that bring about stress call for experience. Essentially, it means thinking something through with the objective of anticipating what might go wrong. Understanding Stress Reactions Understanding how a person reacts to stress is vital in making that person an effective leader. Emotional intelligen ce refers to the ability to comprehend and manage oneââ¬â¢s emotions and of those around them (Vidula et al, 2012: p10). Leaders or team members who have good emotional intelligence normally know their feelings, what it means, and the manner in which this can affect the rest of the team. For a leader, being aware of oneââ¬â¢s emotions is vital for success. A leader, who shouts at

Tracking Legislation in Northern Virginia (ie Fairfax, Arlington, Essay
Tracking Legislation in Northern Virginia (ie Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria) (Issues Transportation, Immigration, Guns, Taxes) - Essay Example The bill also removes a subsection that makes offenses in the rest of the section secondary offenses. This bill simply means that Virginia drivers ages 15, 16 and 17 will not be able to talk, send text, messages or snap photos with a phone while driving on Virginia roads. This ban, designed to reduce accidents, also will apply to hands-free devices but will allow teens to use a phone during an emergency. This HB 942 affects me and all the young road drivers who pass by the highways and roads of the State of Virginia. The bill puts a limit on the number of passengers one can bring with and it also institutes a driving clinic for errant young drivers. The first major provision of the bill states that "whenever the driving record of a person less than 19 years old shows that he has been convicted of committing, when he was less than 18 years old, (i) an offense for which demerit points have been assessed or are assessable under Article 19 ( 46.2-489 et seq.) of this chapter or (ii) a violation of any provision of Article 12 ( 46.2-1091 et seq.) or Article 13 ( 46.2-1095 et seq.) of Chapter 10 of this title, the Commissioner shall direct such person to attend a driver improvement clinic." The second major provision states that "If any person less than 19 years old is convicted a second time of committing, when he was less than 18 years old, (i) an offense for which demerit points have b een assessed or are assessable under Article 19 ( 46.2-489 et seq.) of this chapter or (ii) a violation of any provision of Article 12 ( 46.2-1091 et seq.) or Article 13 ( 46.2-1095 et seq.) of Chapter 10 of this title, the Commissioner shall suspend such person's driver's license or privilege to operate a motor vehicle for 90 days. Such suspension shall be consecutive to, and not concurrent with, any other period of license suspension, revocation or denial. The initial license issued to any person younger than 18 years of age shall be deemed a provisional driver's license. Until the holder is 18 years old, a provisional driver's license shall not authorize its holder to operate a motor vehicle with more than one passenger The general public is helped positively by this new bill since it reinforces the importance of road safety among Virginia' young drivers. The bill has a negative impact on young drivers since they have to forego the convenience of using wireless devices while driving. However, if one takes the importance of road safety at heart, the young people also benefit in terms of lives saved and the preservation of private property arising from damage due to potential road accidents. The main goal of a traffic safety program is dedicated to saving lives and reducing injuries by preventing traffic crashes in Virginia. The aim is the maximum protection of the driving public. The success of these efforts is seen in the number of lives saved and the injuries prevented. Traffic fatalities were identified as the leading cause of death, especially for young people between the ages of four and 34. The "years of life lost" as a result of these terrible events make their social costs particularly high. Many of these tragic losses of lives could have been prevented with better traffic safety bills. Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine wants more traffic safety bills in order to reduce accidents and injuries due to erring drivers. Traffic safety is an important issue since Virginia had suffered from many traffic accidents which had resulted in the loss of many lives. For instance, Virginia's 2004 rate of 1.17 fatalities per 100 million vehicle-miles of travel was lower than the national average of 1.44 per 100

Social obligation Essay Example for Free
Social obligation Essay Fred was sitting in his usual spot, with his coffee piping its way up his nose. Yet today there were other things on his aging mind. His blind eyes pierced the darkness before him amidst the meaningless babble around him. He knew the people around him were talking, and he knew that it was when the voices were hushedâ⬠¦transformed to a whispers, that they were talking about him. He trusted those around him despite the knowledge that he was really rather a burden on society. His experience of people had told him he would be this way and his mind drifted to the very day he realized what life was about. He remembered the day it happened. He remembered most of all because he had chosen to hold this memory close. The streets had been quiet and heavy with the smell of spring rains and he could hear the slow drip of precipitation as it coursed its way off of roof-tops and gutters onto the rising mist of the pavement. The man sat with his legs stretched out on the newspapers and cardboard on the hard concrete. ââ¬Å"Pennies for the old man. â⬠He drawled through his spittle stained mouth. Fred shivered and walked on. ââ¬Å"I know who you are. â⬠Shouted the man after him through a gurgled laugh. Fred cringed deeply, hating the uselessness and hopelessness of the man who took the role of his alter-ego. Yes, that ego he nurtured so close to his puffed up breast. He continued walking towards the park, where he proposed to write a new song for his ever-growing repertoire. His daughter was participating in a play that day, but he hated the formalities of everyday life and particularly the things that were expected of his. Social obligation. There had been something in the mockery of the street-manââ¬â¢s voice that seems to worm its way into his preoccupied brain. ââ¬Å"I know who you areâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ he repeated to himself, sneering at the arrogance of a man who had amounted to nothingâ⬠¦really. On his way back from the park, he thought of possible ways he could avoid walking past the menacing man. No, there was no way out and he shrunk into his designer overcoat, pulling his Al Capone hat over his eyes. That wouldnââ¬â¢t work either, he always wore it. The man was still there, apparently sleeping. Fred tiptoed past, holding his breath until he thought he was past the threat. He let out a deep breathâ⬠¦rolling his eyes back in relief. He heard a cackle and thought he was imaging it, perhaps his artistic overbearing imagination had gotten the better of him. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t wanna see me do you? â⬠said the gravelly voice. The sun was setting and the steam still rose form the grey pavement as Fred peered down at it. He suddenly felt awfully small. Maybe he should just talk to the man and get it over with he was thinking when the voice replied, ââ¬Å"Yeah, just talk to the old man and get it over withâ⬠¦who knows, it could be you one day. â⬠He shrunk a few inches more and turned to swagger back to the emaciated body. ââ¬Å"Let me buy us coffee first. â⬠Fred offered grudgingly. ââ¬Å"I just loooove coffee, shrieked the voice, ââ¬Å"but good Brazilian coffee please, none of this fake stuffâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Well, Fred thought, take the armâ⬠¦. The two misfits were sitting on the pavement in silence, sipping the hot life-giving liquid. At length Fred began to wonder, ââ¬Å"So how did you come to be here? â⬠The man sighed, a wet tuberculosis riddled sigh. ââ¬Å"Wellâ⬠¦my father was a surgeon and my motherâ⬠¦she never had to work. My father never had much time for me but I had all I could want. â⬠The sky was falling again, but Fred was enjoying the feeling of rain on his Carducci slacks. ââ¬Å"I studied and became a lawyer, got married and children and got divorced. Losing my family made me lose faith in being accomplished at anything. I just let it all goâ⬠¦drank it away. Felt it was easier to just live on the streets and have no one to answer to, no one placate. It was easy, but lonely. I got in a fight on the streets and had my eyes gouged out. Now I see more than I ever used to. â⬠Fred began to feel uncomfortable, but there was something he needed to ask. ââ¬Å"Do you never miss your family, childrenâ⬠¦friends. â⬠The man gurgled again, smiling a gapped smile, the teeth that remained, clawing into the heart of the viewer. ââ¬Å"Nah, I have more friends now than I ever did. These friends care about me out of pity, the others cared about me for what they could get out of me. â⬠Fred looked out at the empty streets and sidewalksâ⬠¦thinking of the man he walked past everyday with ever having really understood why he was thereâ⬠¦

Sigmund Freud was born May 6, 1856 in the Moravian town of PÃ
â¢Ã bor in the Austrian Empire, which is now part of the Czech Republic. His parentsââ¬â¢ names were Jacob and Amaila Freud; they both were Jewish. Despite their poverty, Sigmund Freudââ¬â¢s parents supported his education. The Panic of 1857 was the world's first world-wide economic crisis causing the family to relocate to Leipzig and eventually settle in Vienna. In 1865 Freud entered high school at the age of nine. He was a very intelligent student and graduated from the Matura, a high school exit exam with honors. Freud was accepted into the University of Vienna at age seventeen studying within the medical field. In 1882 Freud began his medical career in the psychiatric clinic at the Vienna General Hospital. He decided to enter a private practice in 1886 and specialize in nervous disorders. Sigmund Freud was one of the most influential and interesting men in the field of psychology. He was one of the first majo r social scientists to develop a theory to help explain and understand human behavior. Freud established ideas about how the human mind works and how unconscious desires control behavior. Though his work was great, others were uncertain about how unusual his ideas were. Freudââ¬â¢s work was based on personal perceptions. Freud is best known as the father of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis focuses on the unconscious characteristics of behavior. Freud believed that the conscious level of the mind was comparable to the tip of the iceberg which could be seen, but the unconscious mind was hidden. The unconscious mind contains aspects of the personality of which a person is unaware. When conscious the being is fully aware. One of Freudââ¬â¢s earliest works was Die Traumdeutung, German f... ...culine and feminine characteristics." During Sigmund Freudââ¬â¢s greatest years of scientific discovery, he endured thirty-three operations to his mouth due to a cancerous growth. Throughout this short, sixteen year period in his life he had published the importance of sexual motivations in Beyond the Pleasure Principle in 1920; organized data concerning the structure of the mind in The Ego and the Id in 1923 and other great works as well. Sigmund Freud died on September 23, 1939. His discoveries in the field of psychology have influenced the modern culture we live in today. Freud is most known for his theories about his theories of the libido, dreams, the mind and the unconscious. Freudââ¬â¢s work recognized the first efficient way of explaining the internal forces that determine human behavior. Psychoanalysis has become a dominant theory in how modern psychology works.

Wonder of Modern Scince
apple pie and baseball. Here is more about the culture of USA. American People: The American society is a blend of native Americans as well as a large number of immigrants from various countries like Ireland, Germany, Poland, Italy, Latin America, Asia and Africa. Having gone through a phase of racial discrimination, the United States of America today recognizes four races in the country ââ¬â Native American, African-American, Asian and European American. Religions in America: The majority of United States includes Protestant Christians. The percentage of Catholics is slightly less than the Protestants. In addition to this, USA being a secular state, a number of people have also adopted other religions like Judaism, Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. Health Care Project Essay
Team B has chosen prescription drugs for our health care reform project and how our current economic status is influenced. We will give ideas and solutions to show how to decrease the drug pricing. Ways that can be implemented toward a solution. Pharmaceutical companyââ¬â¢s need to amend their business practices from a high profit, low development model to a moderate profit, moderate to high development model. Structures and regulation that will explain the competition, barriers to entry, and regulations. Taking a look at drug pricing from different perspective, like cost, research, and development, marketing, and the manufacturing of pharmaceutical drugs. The Monopoly of pricing who is involved, and the curves associated with it. Price discrimination how it changes whoââ¬â¢s involved and what the criteria are for groups as well as pricing for individuals. How cost of co pays differ from brand names to generic and how the drug formulates come into play. How to make the system work for everyone that will amount to higher than just a 30-day supply, pharmacy assistance programs, local charity programs, and low income opportunities. Better ways to enforce existing legislation, vote in new legislation, and regulate prices across the board. The above affects the insured and non-insured Americanââ¬â¢s. For most American households, paying for health care to include prescription drugs and medical bills has been one of the hardest financial strains out there. According to a report published by (Consumer Reports, 2012), many have cut back on other household expenses or taken potentially dangerous measures with their health to afford their medications. The most affected population is the working-age Americans who do not have prescription drug insurance coverage. More than half of the people who completed the survey requested by Consumer Reports took one or more prescriptions had to reduce other household expenses or make changes in how the general population manage their finances. These reductions included how much they spend on their groceries, entertainment, activities with the family, and using their credit cards to purchase medications. The problemà was more severe with younger people than elderly people age 65 and older. ââ¬Å"84 percent of them said they had to resort to such measuresâ⬠(Consumer Reports, 2012) as previously listed. Prescription drugs or better yet the cost of prescription drugs is a discussion in the country of importance. The rise of the cost of prescription drugs is of important to many people in the United States and plays a huge role in the economics of health care. The elevated pricing of prescription drugs has become a focal point of politics and in need of some governance. Even though healthcare and prescription drugs are seen as a private sector issue, the discussion of some socialist measures put into place is a definite need for the economy. Some of those ideas include price-capping expensive drugs and even importing drugs from Canada. Healthcare and prescription drugs have been privatized; however, the government has a huge influence on them both. According to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, the government, including state, and federal, has contributed more the 2.7 trillion in 2011. This shows that we have hidden, or more politically correct, blurred the view of a socialist healthcare system. The currently health care system with health care reform has caused confusing for co nsumers. Many people are struggling to pay for the high cost of medication they are on. Some of the patients have to take a different type of medication, which is called alternative medication because their insurance denied paying for it in addition; the process to get approval from insurance takes longer time and more paperwork back and forth from doctors and insurance companies. In reality, health care consumers are the victims, they suffer from their medical illnesses, and they suffer for the high cost of prescription drugs. Health care reform in theory is helping more than forty million people to have health coverage, the demand curve shifts to the right. The important matter at the present time is the supply to cover that many people to have a quality care whereas the economy is gradually recovering. Dell New Horizons Case Analysis Essays
Dell New Horizons Case Analysis Essays Dell New Horizons Case Analysis Essay Dell New Horizons Case Analysis Essay Dell-New Horizons HBS case-9-502-022 Introduction As a consecutively successful and fast-growing company, Dellââ¬â¢s management got the pressure of maintaining the rapid growth. On the other hand, the hyper-growth in the PC industry over-drafted some growth potential in the coming years and the bubble of the internet economy burst so the speed of the growth would slow down. Since March 2000, Dellââ¬â¢s performance in market capitalization and stock prices had got a slump. In addition, competitions were becoming ferocious so Dell frequently lowered its prices, lowering profit margins as well. Therefore, how to maintain a 30% growth in revenues and earnings year after year was a challenge to Dell. Dell faced the options such as product growth, service growth and international markets growth. In the product growth section, personal computers, workstations, servers and storage were the portfolio. Whether to enter new product categories such as high-end servers, external storage and enterprise services was on the table for the management. The financial constraint was $7. 9 billion in cash on its balance sheet. (In 2000, net income + average growth on liabilities=$ 5,146 million). In this analysis, we will scrutinize the growth options and Dellââ¬â¢s ability in certain fields to make sure which options are suitable for it. Finally, we will lay out a prospective plan to pursue growth. Analysis Dellââ¬â¢s success relies on the growing market of PC industry, its business model and its superior ability to execute to sustain the business model. Dell Direct model was about low cost, direct customer relationships and virtual integration. It was a high velocity, efficient distribution system characterized by build-to-order manufacturing, and products and services targeted at specific market segments. From mail orders and phone orders to internet orders processing, Dell has a long history and experience in direct selling, making it difficult for competitors to imitate. Personal computers This is the biggest segment with $ 217 billion in 2000. It was almost 75% of Dellââ¬â¢s revenues and the market still grew at 10% even though it slowed down from a speed of 20%. It was very important so Dell still need to work hard on this field. Further prices cutting might get some players out of this game while it would harm Dell as well. Dellââ¬â¢s operating incomes on sales were 9% in 1999, 8% in 2000, and 5% in 2001. Without new effective ways to cut costs down further, prices cutting would harm the industry and Dell itself. Dell can expand in this segment by focus on small and medium businesses. International markets such as Asia/Pacific and Japan are main fields to grow. Dell already did a good job in relationship business, producing 60% Dellââ¬â¢s U. S revenues. While in small and medium businesses, Dell had enough space to expand because only 30% of U. S revenue was from this segment and small and medium businesses are countless. Workstations This is the smallest segment in Dellââ¬â¢s products portfolio. The market was $9. 2 billion in 2000 worldwide. Dell already got 36. 8% in U. S and 29. 6% worldwide. With the increasing of Windows-based workstations, Dellââ¬â¢s share can be expected to grow. This segment can contribute revenues to Dell while Dell should not allocate too many resources on it. Servers This is the second largest segment. It was $69 billion in 2000 and kept 7% growth per year. SIAS enjoyed annual growth in excess of 30% and Dell played in SIAS arena and had 25. 5% share in 2001. Therefore, Dellââ¬â¢s management considered entering high-end servers. It is reasonable because Dell had no market share in high-end servers. Storage This market was $69 billion in 2000 and kept 23% growth per year. The industry trend was that NAS and SAN were getting two-thirds of the market while DAS would fall to one-thirds from 70%. Dellââ¬â¢s products mainly were NAS with cheaper prices than competitorsââ¬â¢ such as Compaq, Network Appliance and Sun N8200. Dell also allied with EMC by selling its CLARiiON line of products. This is a good idea because Dell can acquire experience and expertise in SAN products and know more about EMC. Manufacturing is easy while selling is difficult. Dell had powerful direct sales force in medium and small business and government accounts. After Dell gets technology, experience and expertise in SAN, it can get into this field. From 1996 to 2001, Dellââ¬â¢s profit margin on sales was 8% in 1998 and 1999, the highest, while it was 1% in 1997 and 2001, the lowest. On the other hand, EMCââ¬â¢s profit margin on sales was 20% in 2000, the highest, and 12% in 1996 and 1998, the lowest. It was more profitable than Dellââ¬â¢s PC products. Dell had reasons to pursue bigger market share in this market. Critics thought that Dell did not have robust products and was not getting help from Microsoft and Intel in terms of getting the quality of stuff and that Dell had no strength in reliability, serviceability, availability and manageability. However, that does not mean that Dell cannot acquire supports from Microsoft and Inter and that Dell cannot cultivate the abilities. Dell launched Controlled Deplyment Team to improve its abilities. Service Portfolio It contributed $2 billion to Dellââ¬â¢s 2000 revenues and was an increasingly important part of its portfolio. Dell had strength in speed, costs and prices. It can leverage the strength to expand the service portfolio. Of course, it is limited by other products Dell can sell. It cannot be separate from Dellââ¬â¢s products. If it was separated, the workers would spend time and money to study other competitorsââ¬â¢ products and this would improve competitorsââ¬â¢ service availability. International market growth The PC market worldwide was 3 times bigger than the U. S market and the workstations market worldwide was twice of the U. S market while Dell had only 25% revenues outside the U. S. It is not difficulty to understand that Kevin Rollins was particularly keen to bring Dellââ¬â¢s international revenues up to the U. S. benchmark. In the U. S. , Dell was the number one in PC and workstations while it was the third in Western Europe, the 7th in Asia/Pacific and the 8th in Japan. Kevin Rollinsââ¬â¢ assumption is reasonable. Dell can be the number one in the U. S. Why canââ¬â¢t in other countries? It confronted almost the same competitors in foreign countries as in the U. S. Recommendation To maintain a 32% growth, we recommend a 25% growth in the U. S. and a 50% growth in the international market. Even in 2001, Dellââ¬â¢s growth was 26%, the lowest since 1996. Therefore, a 25% growth in the U. S. is reasonable. From 1998 to 2000, Western Europe market grew by 26%, 88% in Asia/Pacific, 78% in Japan, 52% in Latin America and 39% in the rest of the world. So an expected 50% growth in the international market is practical. Dell should expand high-end servers and external storage market by leveraging its cost advantages, high velocity and good executions. In addition, it should aggressively expand in international markets, focusing on Germany, China and Brazil. To get bigger shares in high-end servers and external storage, Dell can ally with Microsoft and Intel. They already had cooperation and allies in PC and workstations. The homework is just to expand these allies to high-end servers and external storage by negotiations. Even it can consider a merge or purchasing with EMC so EMC can contribute the technology and expertise and Dell can contribute the sales channels, low costs, and excellent executions. Dell also needs to allocate more budgets to RD to develop ââ¬Å"robust productsâ⬠. We recommend increasing the budget for RD to 3% from 1. %. The market segment is small and mid-size companies. EMCââ¬â¢s products are too expensive. Dell can target this market by offering much cheaper and a little storage solutions. Low costs and prices are Dellââ¬â¢s strength. On the other hand, the sufficient growth in the market can bring profits to Dell. To expand in the international markets, people are the key. Why didnt Dell play the best in foreign countries as it did in the U. S? The answer should be that the management teams in foreign countries were not competent in those markets. Probably they were very good in the U. S. ut not in foreign countries due to languages and cultures. Dell should launch a program to recruit and train more competent managers who are natives in foreign countries and know their markets very well and let them work in the U. S. to learn Dellââ¬â¢s culture, values, and management skills, and then relocate them to their homelands to take management positions. In addition, aggressive marketing in these markets is important, more sales people, more advertising, more promotion and more distributors, if applicable. Strategy Adopted by an Organization Is a Consequence of the Match Essay
Strategy Adopted by an Organization Is a Consequence of the Match between the Organizations External Relationships and its Internal Capabilities - Essay Example The researcher states that a mismatch between the internal capability of an organization and its strategies may to some extent contribute to less than optimal output and input ration in an organization. The accessible research findings have confirmed the existence of a very close relationship between an organizationââ¬â¢s internal capabilities, the organizationââ¬â¢s strategies, and the organizationââ¬â¢s external relationships. In most cases, organizations that have the ability to balance between their internal capabilities and their strategies have competitive advantages over institutions that formulate their policies without considering their internal strengths and weaknesses.
